Gotta See Them: SINISTER and RED LIGHTS

When a movie is advertised as being “from the makers of…” or “the director of…” my cynicism kicks in.  I think that with a film like last years, INSIDIOIUS, that spouting out recognizable tags like “from the creators of PARANORMAL ACTIVITY and SAW” that the movie wouldn’t have much going for it, so why not tell people who the minds behind two of the most recent, popular genre franchises created this lovechild?  I was shocked when I actually saw INSIDIOUS.  Not only was it a well made and effective movie, I actually found it to be better than PARANORMAL ACTIVITY and SAW.  So my cynicism was pushed to aside when I saw the trailer for their newest film, from the creators of PARANORMAL ACTIVITY and INSIDIOUS (SAW has been traded out).  The new movie SINISTER explores another “haunted house” theme that, in many ways, has been beaten to death.  Here we have the awesome, Ethan Hawke, discovering his new home’s well sinister origins.  It’s nothing highly original, but it does look better than some of the other recent crap that’s been released like the abysmal CHERNOBAL DIARIES.

Robert DeNiro, Sigourney Weaver, and Cillian Murphy in a movie about a possible fake medium? I’m sold.  RED LIGHTS is going to be another must see for the summer.  It’s one of those films that’s probably already good, but was made great by the A-list cast.  It doesn’t hurt that Rodrigo Cortes, the brilliant director behind BURIED, helmed this film.

  1. I gotta say, SINISTER looks like it could be really good but they should have picked a different name. Baghoul just screams rush job.
As for red lights, saw the trailer for that a couple months ago and it could be good or it could just be another run of the mill thriller. Judgement is still out on that one.
