Leatherface is a horror icon that needs no introduction. What he does need is a decent follow-up. The original 1974 Texas Chainsaw Massacre was a relentless movie that still holds up today. No movie, other than The Exorcist, has scared the shit out of me to the point where I had trouble sleeping. The original sequels were garbage and how some die-hard fans prefer those to the remake series will baffle me until I’m old and gray. And while the remake series lacked the visceral brutality of the original, I found they were fairly effectively entertaining films. (See previous reviews). When I found out the original makers were back to create a true sequel to the original I was as excited as Mitt Romney at an NRA convention, but then I heard it would be released in the not-gone-soon-enough fad of digital 3D. The next nail in the coffin was the January release date, otherwise known as a dumping ground for horror films- actually most films for that matter. Nonetheless I was excited when bits and pieces of info about the movie came out. The modern-day setting to the very cool poster to Trey Songz running around shirtless. The trailer has finally been revealed and I must say that, visually speaking, it seems to have more in common with the remake series than of the original. In fact it seems more like a remake of the remake- nothing new, nothing unique. Having said that, I’ll be the first in line on January 4, 2013.
