For our Classic Trailer Park series, we’re going to highlight effective genre movie trailers. While these clips are highlighted, this doesn’t necessarily speak to the quality of the film itself, only the effectiveness of the preview. Some films have excellent trailers but the film is terrible like The Nightmare on Elm Street remake, while for others, the opposite can be true like the original Friday the 13th.
John Boorman’s THE EXORCIST 2: THE HERETIC is widely considered one of the worst films of all time. Following up the Oscar winning original would be no easy task no matter who made the film, but the psychedelic, unintentionally comedic, daunting sequel fell flat on its face and quickly became the laughing stock of Hollywood. Even today, over 40 years later, the sequel remains divisive but has been slowly creating its own cult status due to its cheesy execution and over-ambitious storytelling. While the widely seen trailer makes THE EXORCIST 2: THE HERETIC look like a horror version of CAN’T STOP THE MUSIC, the original teaser holds up quite well and exhibits the blood-curdling terror that the film could’ve been.
This movie still sucks but this teaser is haunting.
