Perhaps I need to expand my friends circle because I can’t find one of them who still watches THE WALKING DEAD or FEAR THE WALKING DEAD. I know both shows are still successful in the ratings, although nowhere near what they were in the earlier seasons. I’ve read that the latest season of THE WALKING DEAD was a return to its former creative glory. But, I still can’t find anyone who still watches the show. I lost interest around the time Tyrese was killed off. The show became a chore at that point. I just got bored with the show’s narrative and characters and the constant twists that made the show seem desperate and not confident like it once was. It was like Ryan Murphy took over showrunning duties. So it was to my surprise that a new spinoff was in the works.
According to AMC, the currently untitled series will “feature two young female protagonists and focus on the first generation to come of age in the apocalypse as we know it. Some will become heroes. Some will become villains. In the end, all of them will be changed forever. Grown-up and cemented in their identities, both good and bad.” Mmhhhmm. The new series looks like an expanded version of 28 WEEKS LATER with casting based on who can pass the paper bag test. At least the show gives another opportunity for Chris Hardwick to test his standup material on us for another hour a week afterwards.
If you’re still into THE WALKING DEAD universe and care about the upcoming show, that will probably have a name like THE WALKING DEAD: GENERATION Z, the trailer is below.
